New York Mayor Mamdani’s First 9/11 Memorial Service as a Day of Remembrance

This year’s 9/11 memorial service marks Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s inaugural participation as New York City’s leader. He emphasizes the profound responsibility accompanying such a somber event, aiming to honor those who perished rather than politicizing the occasion.

It’s about their families. It’s about the lives that have been shattered. And when you go through the museum, you see in those portraits an entire city,” Mamdani remarked.

As the city prepares to observe the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Mamdani emphasizes the necessity for collective remembrance. “We gather together, not as individuals, but as New Yorkers, with love of that same city that they sought to protect,” he stated. He views this observance as a time to remember the courage displayed on that day and to uphold the responsibility of never forgetting.

The commitment to remembrance aligns with ongoing health issues faced by many affected by the attacks. There have been persistent calls for transparency regarding the release of related documents.

Mamdani advocates for the disclosure of all feasible documents, recognizing public curiosity about potential unknown details. The city’s fiscal year 2027 budget includes $34.2 million to develop a public online portal for accessing these documents, aiming to enhance their searchability and accessibility. Mamdani commented, “They can type in their keywords. They can look through these documents.”

The response during the 2001 attacks highlighted critical communication issues within emergency services like the FDNY and NYPD. Mamdani expresses strong support for providing emergency personnel with top-tier equipment, stressing the vital need for federal, state, and local alignment. “The least we can do for people who are running towards the very dangers that many run away from is to make sure that they have the best possible equipment,” Mamdani argued.

Reflecting on past counter-terrorism strategies, Mamdani acknowledges the historical deployment of surveillance programs, including informants in specific communities. While maintaining city security is essential, Mamdani insists on upholding individual rights against potential overreach based on religious or faith-based profiling. He praises the NYPD’s current balance between maintaining public safety and respecting citizens’ rights.

New York City remains a primary target for terrorism. In case of credible threats, Mamdani outlines a protocol entailing direct consultations with law enforcement to assess and neutralize threats, ensuring public safety. “The first thing I would do is sit down with my police commissioner and all of the top brass and work through exactly what the threat is, how we can ensure that it never materializes and how we keep New Yorkers safe,” Mamdani described.
