Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary, discussed her initial briefing and responded to critiques about her credentials in an interview with Sean Hannity. The Pepperdine Law graduate defended her performance, noting the short time she had to prepare since her appointment by President Donald Trump.
Zacharia’s first appearance in the White House briefing room was on Tuesday, shortly after her appointment on Friday. She shared, “I really stepped up to the plate to do the press conference… with very little prep time, I received briefing materials in the morning of Tuesday.”
Her 14-minute briefing involved focusing on the Trump administration’s achievements ahead of midterm elections. Zacharia took only three questions during this time, which attracted scrutiny. She explained her limited time on the job, saying, “Given the fact that I’d been on the job less than eight hours and had a briefing book in the morning, I feel like I did my very best, Sean, to deliver for the American people that day.”
When questioned about only answering conservative outlets, she contended this narrative by mentioning her engagement with the Daily Mail, which does not align as a conservative outlet. She added, “I think it’s been mixed because they’ve said I only took questions from conservative outlets.”
During her debut, Zacharia disclosed significant news that the Trump administration asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign from her ambassador role. She said, “I was able to deliver breaking news, which I do believe was the right thing to do as the press secretary.”
Questions about her legal background arose after a report by The Wall Street Journal highlighted her failure in the California bar exam. Hannity addressed social media claims identifying her as an attorney. Zacharia clarified, “I think they were retweets, and I corrected the record and said that there’s not endorsing the title.”
Discussing her bar exam experience, she explained, “I graduated Pepperdine, got married in the same week, and we had all intent to move out to China.” She noted she took the bar exam understanding its results would hold little consequence.
Despite criticism, including from comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Zacharia remains determined to build stronger press corps relationships. She concluded, “I would love to build a relationship with all of those members of the press corps so there is a substantive component to us having an ability to interact.”
