Demands for Change Following an ICE-Involved Shooting

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on President Donald Trump to cease all U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in New York after a shooting incident involving ICE agents. The altercation, which took place in the Bronx, led to protests and confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement.

During a news conference on Thursday night, Mayor Mamdani condemned the actions of ICE, describing them as a source of terror in the city. He reported speaking with President Trump for two hours in hopes of securing the release of the man involved, although efforts were unsuccessful.

Mayor Mamdani accused ICE of acting with impunity and causing chaos across the nation. “Today’s shooting is further confirmation of what we have long known. ICE is rotten to its core,” Mamdani stated. He also noted that the injured man was removed from the hospital by ICE agents.

Governor’s Appeal and Public Outrage

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the issue, revealing her conversation with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and called for an end to ICE enforcement operations in the state.

Governor Hochul urged transparency by requesting the release of any body camera footage to clarify the facts of the incident.

Details of the Incident

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE agents were attempting to arrest a wanted man from the Dominican Republic around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The operation resulted in an agent shooting and injuring the individual.

DHS stated that the wounded man, identified as an illegal immigrant, had a history of criminal convictions including grand larceny, assault, robbery, and drug and weapons possession. He was also alleged to have connections to the Trinitarios gang.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the man as 28 years old and stated that a five-year-old child, presumably his son, was in the vehicle during the shooting. The boy was unharmed and is now in the care of a family member.

Protests and Demonstrations

In response to the shooting, hundreds gathered outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital chanting “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace.” Tensions escalated as police set up barricades and some demonstrators threw objects at officers.

The incident led to several arrests during the demonstration.
