President Trump’s Strategic Visits to California and Nevada

President Donald Trump is visiting California and Nevada this week. These visits aim to highlight contrasts with Democrats on issues such as the economy, border security, and crime. This effort supports Republicans in the upcoming November elections, which could determine control of Congress.

Trump faces challenges connecting with voters on the economy. Inflation and uncertainty overshadow stock market gains and low unemployment rates. On Tuesday, Trump will attend a fundraising dinner in Los Angeles for the Republican National Committee. This event takes place at a golf club his family owns in Rancho Palos Verdes. On Wednesday, Trump will address the economy at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas.

“Only 32% of U.S. adults approved of Trump’s handling of the economy,” according to an AP-NORC poll conducted in late July. In that poll, 69% of Americans described the economy as “poor.” Many cited the cost of essentials like groceries and gas as major stressors.

Trump’s overall approval rating sits at 33%, slightly below his first term’s standing. Before flying to California, Trump waved as he boarded Marine One from the White House, signaling his focus on this pivotal visit.

During the trip, Trump may target California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028. Newsom opposes Trump and is often mocked by the president. Trump compares his “commonsense agenda” to what he calls the “radical policies” of Democrats like Newsom. He emphasizes tax cuts, reducing government fraud, and addressing immigration and crime.

The president first returned to California in January 2025 to survey wildfire damage in Los Angeles County. Despite initial cooperation with Newsom, tensions escalated when Trump deployed federal troops to Los Angeles without Newsom’s consent. This was in response to protests after immigration raids. Newsom accuses Trump of traveling to California not to aid wildfire survivors, but to raise funds and criticize the state.

“More than anything, we’d like the President to keep the promise he made on January 24, 2025: to ‘take care of Los Angeles,'” Newsom stated. “18 months later, survivors are still waiting,” he added.

Next, Trump visits Nevada, where a key gubernatorial race unfolds. Republican Governor Joe Lombardo faces Democrat Aaron Ford. The Nevada Democratic Party plans billboards linking Trump to Lombardo and rising costs. Nevada’s challenges include affordable housing shortages, increasing energy demands, and federal program cuts. Trump promotes tax cuts and manufacturing growth; however, high interest rates, gas prices linked to the Iran conflict, and tariffs create economic hurdles.

Trump’s past economic speeches often drift into political narratives. Recently, at a General Motors facility in Michigan, he criticized opponents and discussed projects in Washington, D.C.
