Dan Fouts, a well-known figure in Oregon football, understands the brutal nature of the sport all too clearly. Recently, during the Ducks’ commanding 41-20 win over USC, an incident highlighted this harsh reality. Linebacker Desman Stephens delivered a late and dangerous hit to Dante Moore, who was attempting to slide. This incident resulted in Moore being taken off the field, marking a worrisome moment.
Fouts commended Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, for his composed response to the situation. “Lanning’s approach was ideal,” Fouts mentioned in an interview with OutKick. “He gathered the team, calmed everyone, offered a prayer for Dante, and refocused the group on their game objectives.” The orderly manner in which Lanning managed the incident impressed Fouts.
Fouts also expressed immediate concern for Moore’s wellbeing upon witnessing the play. He remarked on the violent nature of football, noting, “Injuries are part of this game, and this one looked particularly severe.” His comments came during a discussion for “Miller Night Football.”
Regarding Stephens’ celebration after the hit, Fouts attributed it to youthful indiscretion. “Kids sometimes act in the moment,” he noted, accepting Stephens probably regrets his actions now.
In response to the incident, USC took action by suspending Stephens for their upcoming game against Washington. Stephens issued a heartfelt apology, acknowledging, “My reaction was inappropriate and inexcusable. I deeply apologize to Dante, his family, and everyone who saw my reaction. It does not reflect who I am or represent our program.” He expressed hope for Moore’s speedy recovery and pledged to learn from the experience.
Coach Lanning condemned the hit as “disgusting,” while Moore waits for clearance from the NCAA’s concussion protocol. Meanwhile, Fouts, who starred at Oregon and later in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, continues to hold a prominent place in the football world. The Hall of Famer was inducted in 1993 after a distinguished career spanning 15 seasons.
