Orlin’s Law Proposed to Protect Immigrant Families

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington, has introduced a new bill aimed at safeguarding immigrant families in the United States. The proposed legislation, known as Orlin’s Law, seeks to restrict the authority of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) relating to the detention and deportation of immigrant parents.

This initiative was named after a tragic incident involving a young boy from Florida, Orlin Hernandez Reyes, who lost his life following the deportation of his mother by ICE. The bill specifically prohibits ICE actions against immigrant parents unless there is a significant risk to public safety posed by the individual in question.

The move by Rep. Jayapal underscores ongoing concerns regarding the impact of immigration enforcement on families, particularly when it involves separating children from their parents. Supporters of Orlin’s Law believe that it would provide a measure of protection for immigrant families and prevent heartbreaking consequences similar to what happened to Orlin Hernandez Reyes.
