San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen addressed why closer Mason Miller remained in the game on Sunday, despite his ninth-inning challenges.
Miller, known as one of MLB’s top pitchers, entered during the eighth inning in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. He swiftly took care of his opponents and returned for the ninth inning. However, he struggled and walked the bases loaded with two outs.
Stammen chose to keep Miller in the game to face Jackson Chourio. Chourio hit a single to center field, scoring two runs and securing a 2-0 series lead for the Brewers.
“Going into the game, we were considering Mason for six outs,” Stammen explained. “His quick eighth inning suggested he could handle it. He was battling the strike zone at the end.”
Miller performed exceptionally throughout the season, achieving a 1.67 ERA over 70 innings, striking out 129 batters, and leading the NL with 38 saves in 41 opportunities. However, he hadn’t achieved a six-out save since playing with the Athletics in 2024.
What the Loss Means for the Padres
Following Sunday’s loss, the Padres face the challenge of winning three consecutive games to advance to the NLCS.
They may miss their top starter, Michael King, for the next two games due to his recent performance in Game 2.
Despite this setback, the Padres’ home record against the Brewers this season is strong, including a sweep in a three-game series during the second half. If they perform at their best, they could push the series to five games.
The team’s focus is on Game 3, with Nick Pivetta pitching on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.
