Good morning. Today we’ll explore a new development at a Fifth Avenue location, once home to the famous Pale Male, the red-tailed hawk. There’s news of a new arrival in the bird community.
Until his death in 2023, Pale Male gained fame for residing on Fifth Avenue, attracting attention for his interesting life and relationships. Now, his last mate, Octavia, has returned to the nest with a new partner.
Stella Hamilton, an avid birdwatcher who has observed Octavia since 2014, shared insights about her journey. Octavia had been selective in choosing a new mate after Pale Male. Stella noted, “Every year she would have a boyfriend, but it wouldn’t last due to unsatisfactory nest-building skills or other reasons.” The birding community has yet to decide on a name for Octavia’s new partner.
A few days ago, observers noticed behaviors typical of new parents, such as flying off to gather food like rats or pigeons. Additionally, there’s been a sighting of a small, fuzzy chick in the nest.
In 2013, Octavia and Pale Male had offspring together. D. Bruce Yolton, another bird enthusiast, expressed surprise over this new development. He doubted Octavia’s potential to have another chick due to her age, reflecting on past experiences with Pale Male.
