Though Koivunen’s NHL numbers are modest, his AHL stats with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins bolster confidence. Last season, Koivunen achieved 41 points, consisting of 13 goals and 28 assists in just 34 games. His prior impressive performances in Finland’s SM-liiga also contribute to optimistic expectations.
The evaluation of Koivunen’s value remains uncertain. While his results in the AHL are promising, the transition to consistent NHL success poses challenges. The Penguins hope this contract evolves into a team-friendly deal as Koivunen gains momentum.
The Penguins organization faces additional considerations. They are aware of impending contract renewals for veteran players like Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Sidney Crosby, who currently has a notably affordable deal at $8.7 million AAV. If Koivunen fails to elevate his game, offloading his contract could become a significant challenge later.
