Current Political Landscape in Pennsylvania
Recent polling by Quinnipiac University reveals a tightening race for the governorship in Pennsylvania. Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s lead has narrowed against Republican challenger Stacy Garrity. At the same time, Senator John Fetterman’s approval ratings have plummeted among Democrats.
Pennsylvania remains a critical battleground, split nearly evenly between Democrats and Republicans. Its history of voting for both parties in recent elections reflects this balance. In 2024, the state supported Donald Trump with a narrow margin. This marked a shift from 2020 when it narrowly backed Joe Biden.
Shapiro’s Reelection Challenge
Governor Shapiro seeks reelection this year. The race will test the Democrats’ ability to regain a stronghold in the state. The poll shows Shapiro leading Garrity by 13 points, down from an earlier 18-point lead. Despite this, Shapiro remains favored among 53% of voters, compared to 40% for Garrity.
Although Shapiro’s support has slipped, he retains strong backing from Democrats and independents. His approval rating remains steady at 56%, though disapproval has risen slightly. Garrity, Pennsylvania’s treasurer, is less known among voters, with 58% unfamiliar with her.
Other polls, like one from Franklin & Marshall College, give Shapiro a larger advantage. Forecasters continue to rate his race favorably for the Democratic Party.
Fetterman’s Struggle with Base Support
Senator Fetterman, not up for reelection until 2026, faces declining approval from his party. Only 19% of Democrats approve of his performance, while 69% disapprove. Despite this, he holds 48% approval overall, bolstered by support from Republicans and some independents.
Many Democrats suggest Fetterman should leave the party. However, he asserts he will remain, emphasizing his alignment with Democratic values on issues like LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive rights. Fetterman has faced intra-party criticism, notably for partnering in a fundraising committee with Republican Senator Dave McCormick.
Pennsylvania as a Battleground State
Pennsylvania’s shift from a reliable Democratic state to a key battleground reflects broader regional trends. Once dominated by Democratic victories, it began favoring Republicans with Trump’s 2016 win, though it swung back in 2020 for Biden. This competitive streak is driven by changing voter dynamics, such as stronger Republican support in rural areas and Democratic gains in suburban zones near Philadelphia.
Both Shapiro and Fetterman won their current positions in 2022 amid a Democratic tide, despite challenging circumstances. Republicans rebounded in 2024 with significant victories, including Trump’s win and Bob Casey’s narrow loss to McCormick.
