Starting pitcher Colin Rea and his Chicago Cubs teammates claim they remain focused despite the looming MLB trade deadline. Rea stated, “I haven’t spent too much time thinking about it, me personally,” after the Cubs’ 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field. He added they focus on winning each game, not having time to think about trades. Yet the deadline’s presence was felt at Wrigley Field, as other teams made significant moves over the weekend.
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired top pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. He is set to make his Dodgers debut Tuesday against the Cubs. Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong commented, “I didn’t have a reaction. Has nothing to do with me. It’ll be fun to face him.” Crow-Armstrong also praised Skubal as a person and competitor.
The Cubs participated in trade discussions, dealing right-hander Jameson Taillon to the Toronto Blue Jays. Taillon had been designated for assignment after posting a 5.92 ERA and allowing many home runs. Cubs President Jed Hoyer is expected to acquire more pitchers before the deadline.
“I think we still put ourselves in a position to go get some pieces,” Crow-Armstrong noted. “We’re already in good shape.” He emphasized adding new talent would benefit the team.
Despite recent losses against the Yankees, Cubs pitching has performed well, with a 2.27 ERA since July 24. However, the team still faces challenges with 13 pitchers on the injured list. Cubs manager Craig Counsell highlighted that current MLB rules allow less flexibility than in previous years.
The Cubs’ offense faced difficulties during the series, managing just four hits in their latest game. Walks provided opportunities, but key moments did not go their way. Nico Hoerner found himself in a challenging spot during the sixth inning, ending the opportunity without a challenge.
“I’m sure Nico’s looked at it and wished he would have challenged,” Counsell said. He noted the complexity of decision-making during at-bats.
The Cubs aim to focus on their upcoming series against the Dodgers, regardless of any new trades. Rea emphasized their priority remains on playing games, with trade activities being the front office’s responsibility.
