A small plane unexpectedly plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Boca Raton beach. The pilot, identified as Faith Tenkley, managed to navigate the twin-engine Piper aircraft safely into the water.
Quick Rescue
Within moments of the crash, a lifeguard raced into the ocean to assist Tenkley. Boca Raton Ocean Rescue also arrived promptly. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Pilot Experience
Tenkley, with four years of piloting experience, executed the emergency landing by avoiding buildings and paddleboarders before finding open water. The plane’s tail remained visible protruding from the ocean during the rescue.
Tenkley explained her decision to ditch in the water due to malfunctioning landing gear and engine failure, which posed a risk of igniting the fuel.
Clarifying Details
Peter Busch from Gulf Coast News clarified online misinformation that suggested a male pilot was rescued by a female surfer. Tenkley intended to clear these inaccuracies by speaking to Busch.
Witness Accounts
Beachgoers were shocked by the low-flying plane’s descent, many initially unsure if such a sight was supposed to occur. Video evidence showed the aircraft making a gentle water landing, praised by witnesses for the pilot’s skill.
Planned Trip
The flight originated from Page Field in Fort Myers, with an intended destination of Bimini in the Bahamas to retrieve her parents. Despite encountering mechanical issues, Tenkley opted for a water landing to avoid potential risks associated with runway landing.
