Planned Parenthood mobilized on Capitol Hill as staff and supporters sought to prevent Republican efforts to cut the organization’s federal funding. A previous legislative act blocked Planned Parenthood from billing Medicaid for services such as contraception and cancer screenings, leading to over $700 million in annual losses. This provision will expire on July 4, potentially restoring substantial Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood.
Anti-abortion groups continue urging Republicans to extend the funding block. Planned Parenthood organized a lobbying event with more than 250 supporters, including patient storytellers. Jess Clem, a patient advocate from Minnesota, highlighted the importance of patient narratives in influencing lawmakers.
The House Appropriations Committee is reviewing the FY 2027 HHS funding bill that proposes to defund Planned Parenthood. House Republicans aim to use the reconciliation process to prevent Medicaid users from accessing Planned Parenthood centers.
Nora Walsh-DeVries, VP of Political and Legislative Affairs at Planned Parenthood, emphasized the negative impact of defunding efforts on public health. She stressed the need for continued advocacy, given potential legislative changes in the upcoming congressional sessions. Efforts include collaborating with Democrats to safeguard reproductive health resources and Medicaid access.
“Defunding Planned Parenthood is unpopular and harmful to public health,” stated Walsh-DeVries.
