New York police are examining a new video showing three individuals emerging from a manhole in Manhattan. This follows previous incidents that were considered non-threatening. A video, posted on TikTok, captures three people in overalls and headlamps coming out of a manhole at 32nd St and 7th Avenue, near Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The event took place post 4 a.m. on August 18, according to the person who uploaded the video.
A source from the New York Police Department acknowledged the video, stating, “There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.”
City officials conducted an assessment of the sewer system near the site of the occurrence, confirming no damage was detected. A statement from the city’s Department of Environmental Protection highlighted the dangers and illegality of entering sewer systems.
Hazards of entering sewers include:
- Noxious, potentially lethal gases
- Unstable surfaces
- Risk of flooding
- Confined spaces
The department urges the public to avoid entering any sewer-related structures. Videos from May documented similar incidents with men appearing from manholes across various city locations. Whether the August 18 episode relates to the earlier incidents remains uncertain, although both instances reveal people in protective gear and headlamps.
In May, a man in Brooklyn was observed lifting a manhole cover, allowing seven others to exit the sewer and change clothes. Another footage showed seven men coming out onto a street with active traffic, carrying shovels. Officials suggested the individuals might have been looking for valuables. Following investigations, police assured no immediate threat and no sewer damage.
In June, the NYPD stated, “Emergency Services Unit officers, trained to ensure the public’s safety, inspected the sewer for any suspicious items but found nothing.”
