LaRosa previously served as a press secretary for Jill Biden. His statement marked a significant departure from typical party lines, supporting Republican Mike Rogers instead of El-Sayed. Central to LaRosa’s disapproval is El-Sayed’s connection with Piker. In a 2019 livestream, Piker stated “America deserved 9/11,” prompting widespread backlash.
El-Sayed joined Piker during his campaign and defended his appearances by stating that sharing a platform does not imply agreement with everything said by Piker. For LaRosa, the issue is personal. His best friend’s mother perished on September 11, leaping from the 95th floor of the World Trade Center.
“I won’t defend or support anyone who is too cowardly to stand up to extremists who think the mother of my best friend, who jumped from 95 stories because the alternative was worse, deserved what happened to her,” LaRosa wrote.
This clash underscores a deepening divide within the Democratic Party regarding extremism and political discourse. Such internal conflict might push some Democrats to consider crossing party lines in key elections.
