Trump Administration Challenges Alaska Senate Race Result

4 hours ago 0

The Trump administration has expressed concerns over the legitimacy of a potential narrow victory by the Democratic candidate in Alaska’s Senate race. The ballot includes a candidate with a similar name to incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. The administration contends this situation could lead to a ‘tainted victory.’

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, arguing that the election results should not be certified if Senator Sullivan loses to Democratic challenger Mary Peltola by a margin less than the votes received by a different candidate, retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.

The department’s filing states, ‘Many polls indicate that the race between Senator Sullivan and Peltola will be within one or two percentage points, and Mr. Sullivan received 2.5% of the vote in the primary election.’ This implies that a close outcome could see Peltola winning due to voter confusion with names on the ballot.

Furthermore, the filing seeks to prevent Peltola’s campaign and the League of Women Voters of Alaska from intervening in the case. Should the judge allow their involvement, they plan to file motions to dismiss the lawsuit.

The Justice Department argues, ‘Beyond positing hypothetical future motives, Proposed Intervenors fail to even allege how they would be litigating this case differently than Defendants.’

The lawsuit identifies the state of Alaska and election officials as defendants. ‘At best they will clog up the docket with duplicative motions full of charged (and inaccurate) rhetoric. All in defense of a sham candidate,’ the department added.

Judge Sharon L. Gleason has established an expedited schedule to handle these developments. The government has to respond by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Peltola’s campaign and the voting rights group must reply by noon on Wednesday, with the judge planning to decide on the motions to dismiss by 5 p.m. Thursday.

The ballot lists the Republican incumbent as ‘Dan Sullivan’ and the contender as ‘Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.’ The latter does not declare any party affiliation. As this situation evolves, further updates are anticipated.
