Pope Leo XIV has released an encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” emphasizing the importance of prioritizing human well-being in the face of advancing artificial intelligence. As the first American pontiff, he delivers a vision for the future at a critical juncture in technological evolution. The encyclical arrives at a time when many anticipate significant changes to human life due to AI’s influence.
“Magnifica Humanitas” is his inaugural encyclical, regarded as a major papal teaching. Pope Leo XIV signed it on the anniversary of “Rerum Novarum,” an encyclical by Pope Leo XIII focusing on labor during the Industrial Revolution. This connection underscores his commitment to addressing urgent issues akin to those faced by his predecessor.
The 42,300-word document is addressed to 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide and covers a wide array of topics. A central theme is the distinction between artificial intelligence and human intelligence. Pope Leo XIV warns against equating AI with human intelligence, noting that AI systems perform certain functions rapidly and efficiently. However, they lack experiential understanding, bodily sensations, and emotional depth.
Despite their ability to mimic human intelligence and offer significant benefits across numerous fields, AI systems are fundamentally tied to data processing. They do not experience joy, pain, or growth through relationships. Pope Leo XIV underlines the importance of recognizing AI as a tool, not an entity with human characteristics.
The encyclical stresses AI’s potential as a valuable tool, but Pope Leo XIV calls for vigilance in ensuring that technological advancement remains aligned with human-centered values. This involves acknowledging the limitations of AI and emphasizing its role as a supportive technology rather than a replacement for human experiences.
