President Trump is expected to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. This event will be held in New York City at Madison Square Garden on June 8. The president, known for his support of the Knicks, reportedly received an invitation from James Dolan, the team’s owner. Dolan has previously donated to Trump’s political campaigns.
CBS News has sought comments from both the White House and Madison Square Garden regarding the president’s attendance. News of Trump’s plans was initially reported by The New York Post and The Athletic. The Knicks achieved a victory in Game 1 against the Spurs in San Antonio, winning 105 to 95.
Given the event’s location in Midtown Manhattan, law enforcement has been preparing heightened security measures. The arena is situated above Penn Station, a central transit hub in the city. Furthermore, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to attend Game 3 but wishes to keep his attendance separate from the president’s.
Previously, President Trump expressed his intention to attend Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. That game did not occur, as the Knicks won the series in four games.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the event’s preparations for high-profile attendees. He emphasized the unique ability of sports to unify society, creating connectivity among fans.
“What’s really so special about sports in our society — and it’s a little bit of a cliché — but our increasingly divided society — and that goes to people who will be attending the first home game at Madison Square Garden — it truly brings people together,” Silver said.
Throughout his presidency, Trump frequently attended major sporting events, such as the 2025 Super Bowl and the College Football Playoff National Championship in Miami. It is notable that President Trump will be attending this NBA game, given his history of both supporting and criticizing the league.
Trump’s Criticism of the NBA
During his presidency, Trump criticized NBA players who protested police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem. He tweeted in September 2020, expressing disappointment over the league’s political stance and declining viewership.
Trump had public disputes with NBA superstar LeBron James, especially following the withdrawal of a White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors in 2017. James had endorsed Trump’s Democratic opponents in the presidential elections.
Trump also criticized coaches like Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich for their silence on China-related controversies while openly criticizing the United States.
Friendly Relations with NBA
Before his tenure in the White House, Trump supported the NBA and players like LeBron James, taking a keen interest in Miami’s team achievements. In New York, Trump was frequently seen courtside at Knicks games during past playoff seasons.
In 2010, Trump participated in efforts to recruit LeBron James to the Knicks through a campaign that emphasized New York City’s allure to successful figures. In a halftime interview in 2010, Trump hinted at possible political ambitions.
Trump supported the Knicks during Jeremy Lin’s “Linsanity” period in 2012 and commented on the team’s performance amidst losses. His engagement with the Knicks was evident through various social media posts over the years.
