Professor Mark Bray’s New Book Discusses His Departure from the U.S. Amid Political Tensions

Rutgers University professor Mark Bray, known for his work on anti-fascism, is releasing a new book titled “Unpunctuated Death Threats: Notes from a Fascist Present.” The book is set to release on January 19 and details his move to Spain following the assassination of Charlie Kirk and subsequent threats to his family.

Bray, an assistant professor at Rutgers, left the U.S. with his family after his home address was shared online and threats were made against him. He describes the political climate following Kirk’s murder as dangerous, prompting his departure. Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated while speaking in Utah.

The publisher links Bray’s departure to the political atmosphere after Kirk’s assassination, emphasizing the seriousness of threats against him.

Federal agents reportedly questioned Bray at the airport before he eventually traveled to Spain with his family. The book explores the modern rise of fascism in the U.S., and Bray’s reflections on his Jewish identity amidst these challenges.

Last year, Rutgers’ Turning Point USA chapter initiated a petition to have Bray removed due to his controversial statements. In interviews, Bray has likened Antifa to feminism, framing them as ideologies rather than organized groups.

Bray, author of “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook,” continues to show strong support for anti-fascism. A portion of the proceeds from his book sales will go to the International Anti-Fascist Defense Fund. Antifa, a decentralized movement, has faced scrutiny for some of its violent methods.

Bray also authored books on anarchist movements, further fueling his controversial reputation. In a social media post, he expressed distrust of legal systems under certain political figures, advocating for a widespread anti-fascist movement.

Rutgers student Megan Doyle criticized Bray’s portrayal as a victim, arguing his actions and affiliations contradict this narrative. She also pointed out that he continues to work at Rutgers while promoting his book and receiving donations.
