Congressional progressives are strategizing to leverage the Democrats’ new House majority to hold President Donald Trump accountable for his economic promises. These promises focus on areas such as prescription drug costs and credit card interest rates. Representative Greg Casar of Texas, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), detailed this approach in a memo to caucus members, as obtained by Politico. The document emphasizes that the Democrats’ expanded majority can enhance the ability of progressives to influence legislation.
The CPC anticipates having over 105 members in the next Congress, with many representing districts that have switched from Republican to Democratic control. Casar’s memo highlights the advantage of having members in influential committee and leadership roles.
Three-Part Progressive Strategy
Casar outlines a three-part plan: passing progressive legislation, using congressional oversight to target corporations and the Trump administration, and ensuring that Trump adheres to his populist economic commitments.
Matt Middleton, a White House spokesperson, responded to Newsweek, indicating the President’s willingness to collaborate across party lines on economic issues. Under Trump’s leadership, initiatives such as tax cuts and trade deals were highlighted as achievements.
Newsweek reached out to Casar and Hakeem Jeffries, the presumptive next House Speaker, for comments.
Democratic Majority and Leverage Debate
Democrats gained control of both chambers with around 255 House seats. Casar rejects the notion that a large majority limits factional influence within the party. He argues that a significant majority can facilitate the passage of progressive priorities aimed at reducing costs, curbing corruption, and enhancing wages.
Different factions of the Democratic party interpret the midterm results differently. Progressives view victories by left-leaning candidates as a validation of their approach. Meanwhile, moderates highlight wins in traditionally Republican states as evidence of the need for a broader electoral reach.
Corporate Oversight and Progressive Priorities
Beyond legislation, the CPC’s plan includes heightened congressional oversight. Casar emphasizes that Democrats should aggressively investigate the Trump administration and allied corporations.
He plans to focus on corporate practices such as ‘surveillance pricing’ and Medicare Advantage issues affecting seniors. Casar aims to ensure that Congress actively oversees abuses and protects American workers and consumers.
Casar’s memo lists progressive goals, including raising the minimum wage, strengthening social programs, opposing Trump’s tariffs, and addressing misconduct by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Long-Term Legislative Agenda
Casar notes that while media attention will focus on initial legislative efforts, progressives should be prepared for a sustained campaign over the 100-week majority. The strategy aims to maintain momentum in implementing affordability-focused legislation.
