Progressives Eye Key Victories in Democratic Primaries

Democratic primaries in states such as Michigan and Missouri offer progressives a chance to overcome moderates. These primaries occur as the political left seeks to expand on earlier successes in places like Denver, New York, and Philadelphia. Frustration with the Democratic Party is mounting, leading to victories for progressive challengers over incumbent Democrats.

Tuesday’s primaries are set to gauge the support for progressive candidates in more moderate or conservative Midwestern states. The progressive push arises amid disappointment with the perceived inaction of Democratic leaders against President Donald Trump during his second term. According to a YouGov and The Economist poll, 73 percent of Democrats feel elected officials are challenging Trump “too little,” posing a significant problem for the party establishment.

Michigan’s Senate and House Races

The Michigan Senate primary stands out, with progressive Abdul El-Sayed facing centrist Haley Stevens. This race could influence control of the chamber in the November midterms. Several House races could also see progressives gain over moderates, including key races in Michigan.

Michigan’s 7th District

This swing district features William Lawrence, co-founder of Sunrise Movement, who runs against moderates Bridget Brink and Matt Maasdam. The Cook Political Report labels it a toss-up for the general election.

The district includes Lansing, a Democratic base, and spans central Michigan’s rural areas and Detroit suburbs. Polls show Lawrence leading with 38 percent support compared to Maasdam’s 27 percent and Brink’s 19 percent. Prediction markets strongly favor Lawrence’s victory.

Lawrence criticized Tom Barrett, the GOP representative, for corporate backing. Meanwhile, Brink emphasized her history of taking on significant challenges, suggesting her readiness to fight corporate interests.

Michigan’s 13th District

This district, centered in Detroit, sees progressive Donavan McKinney challenging Representative Shri Thanedar. Though Thanedar has progressive credentials, McKinney is backed by Justice Democrats and other prominent progressives.

Polls show a close contest. Prediction markets highly favor McKinney, who expresses optimism about his campaign, emphasizing the people’s needs and dismissing corporate influence. Thanedar highlights his progressive policies, continuing efforts to impeach Trump, and disputes McKinney’s effectiveness.

Missouri’s 1st District: High-Stakes Rematch

In St. Louis, Representative Wesley Bell and Cori Bush meet again in a closely watched race. Bell previously defeated Bush but progressives hope to reverse this outcome in 2026. Polls reveal a slight edge for Bell, yet prediction markets still favor him for the primary.

The Michigan Senate Race: Progressive Test

El-Sayed leads the Senate race against Stevens. Polls indicate El-Sayed’s advantage, particularly among younger voters. Michigan, a battleground state narrowly won by Trump in 2024, makes this primary crucial for progressive ambitions in November.
