The recent death of Mohammad Ghamira, a young man with a medical condition, in Syrian custody has sparked renewed concerns about abuses within the country’s detention centers. The incident recalls the dark history of torture under the Assad regime, leading to public demands for justice.
Ghamira’s death has prompted Syrians to take to social media and the streets, demanding clarity on the circumstances of his death. Ghamira, who suffered from hemophilia, was buried in his hometown of al-Haffah in Latakia province, having died in a hospital after his release from jail. Prior to his arrest, he was a volunteer with the White Helmets during the civil war.
Government Response and Investigation
Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s administration has committed to investigate the case. Officials state this is not an isolated incident, and others argue that abuses in detention centers continue. Syria’s Interior Ministry has started an investigation into Ghamira’s death, with seven personnel being questioned.
Noureddine al-Baba, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed shortcomings in some police departments. He expressed hope that this incident would drive positive changes within the ministry.
Human Rights Concerns
According to the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry, documented abuses against detainees include torture and ill-treatment across various facilities in Syria. Reports of severe beatings, electric shocks, and lack of basic necessities are prevalent. Syrians for Truth and Justice, a human rights organization, highlights that these issues are widespread but lack centralization compared to past regimes.
It is widespread, but lacks structure. Authorities have a responsibility to halt such behaviors, as stated by Bassam Alahmad, executive director of Syrians for Truth and Justice.
Families for Freedom has expressed that incidents like Ghamira’s death reopen painful memories for families of those who suffered during Assad’s rule. They emphasize the pursuit of ending these practices and their unacceptability under the current administration.
