Punch, an orphaned monkey at a Japanese zoo, has captured the hearts of many worldwide. On his first birthday, he received thousands of well-wishing messages from fans around the globe. Although Punch now has friends, his story began with him clinging to an orangutan plush toy.
Birth and Early Challenges
Punch was abandoned by his mother soon after he was born due to exhaustion. Zookeepers at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden cared for him, providing a plush toy to help him develop crucial gripping skills essential for survival.
Integration and Fame
Initially, Punch was easy to identify as he stuck close to his toy. Now, he blends in with other monkeys in the enclosure. Nonetheless, Punch remains a popular attraction, drawing large crowds. Takashi Yasunaga, the zoo’s head, mentioned receiving about 2,500 birthday cards for Punch. These cards and messages are displayed at a special birthday exhibit accompanying video footage of Punch’s development.
Punch received special care from dedicated keepers throughout his first six months, according to Yasunaga. When he joined the zoo’s monkey enclosure in January, his journey to acceptance among over 50 monkeys began.
Online Sensation
In February, photos of Punch with his plushie went viral, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the zoo, many from overseas. Punch’s struggle and eventual acceptance resonated with fans globally, who expressed support online.
Fan Stories
Visitors like Kumi Ishizawa sought inspiration in Punch’s story. She discovered Punch on social media earlier this year, motivating her recovery from an illness and a visit to the zoo. “I’m very happy I could finally see him in person,” she said.
Yeye Lights, a local resident, bought an annual zoo pass after her daughter introduced her to Punch. “I have a cake for Punch-kun, I’m celebrating with my friends,” she expressed, thanking Punch’s caregivers.
