Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Chiefs Agree to Contract Extension

2 weeks ago 0

Kansas City, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes will continue as quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs beyond the next decade following the agreement on a restructured contract. On Wednesday, the Chiefs and Mahomes, a two-time MVP, reached terms that extend his contract by two years, pushing total compensation over $500 million, according to a source familiar with the deal. Details remain confidential as the Chiefs do not disclose contract financial terms publicly.

The Chiefs shared a photo of Mahomes signing his extension on social media. Initially, Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, setting a record not only for quarterbacks but for all football players. This recent extension ties him to the Chiefs through 2033, increasing compensation to $504.75 million with potential incentives raising it to $522.25 million.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt remarked, “Over the last decade, Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all time.” He noted Mahomes’ role in five Super Bowl appearances, three championship victories, and his influence on the Chiefs’ brand, emphasizing his value both as an athlete and role model.

Mahomes’s contract adjustments occur frequently in the offseason. These changes provide the team financial leeway to add talent for competitive seasons. Recent deals for Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen shifted the quarterback market. Prescott’s contract averages $60 million annually, while Mahomes’ new deal will average $63.1 million.

Mahomes underwent knee surgery last December after a ligament tear and has been rehabilitating. Chiefs coach Andy Reid noted Mahomes’ commitment and progress, emphasizing the importance of his practice regimen for rehabilitation and timing with receivers. This is good for him, I mean getting out there and throwing. It’s good rehab as he continues to rehab, Reid highlighted.

Mahomes is determined to be ready for the regular season opener against Denver on September 14, following a preseason match against the Rams on August 15. I want to be out there with my guys, Mahomes mentioned while focusing on daily progress and hitting milestone checkpoints.

Since becoming the Chiefs starter in 2018, Mahomes has reached nearly 36,000 passing yards, secured six Pro Bowl selections, and achieved three Super Bowl victories in five final appearances. Last season, the Chiefs had a disappointing end with a 6-11 record as Mahomes was sidelined due to injury. His approach focuses on consistent daily effort to ensure readiness for the season’s start.
