The WNBA celebrated a milestone 2026 season with record-breaking achievements in television viewership and attendance. While various accomplishments stand out, one team consistently emerged as the centerpiece of this success: the Indiana Fever.
Television Ratings Soar with the Indiana Fever
Across major networks like ABC, CBS, ESPN, NBC, and streaming platforms such as Peacock, USA Network, and Amazon Prime Video, the presence of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever resulted in the highest regular-season audiences. For example, ABC’s most-watched game was when the Fever faced Chicago on August 23, drawing over 3.31 million viewers, marking the largest audience since the league’s first games in 1997.
ESPN highlighted the Indiana-Atlanta game on August 16, which set a cable TV record with 2.6 million viewers. CBS set a new benchmark with the Indiana-New York game on July 18, drawing 2.58 million viewers, the network’s highest ever for a WNBA game.
Networks and Streaming Platforms Benefit
The Fever bolstered viewership across all evaluated platforms. On ABC, the game against Chicago on August 8 reached 2.56 million viewers. ION’s top game, Indiana-Dallas on August 14, averaged 1.62 million viewers. USA Network’s most-viewed game was Indiana-Golden State on July 15, attracting 1.14 million viewers. Additionally, Prime Video’s highest audience occurred when Indiana played Dallas again on August 20, with 1.07 million viewers.
Another notable game was NBC’s broadcast on July 12, where Indiana faced Las Vegas, engaging 2.64 million viewers, making it the second-highest regular-season audience of the year.
Clark’s Influence on WNBA Viewership
The WNBA capitalized on Caitlin Clark’s substantial influence. Among five regular-season games on ESPN and ABC surpassing two million viewers, Indiana appeared in each one. This trend indicates Clark’s potential to drive significant interest and viewership.
Growing Interest in WNBA Beyond the Fever
The league’s broader success is evident, with 51 regular-season games averaging over one million viewers, a marked increase from 19 in the previous year. Additionally, non-Fever games averaged higher audiences. ESPN and ABC reported an increase to 984,000 average viewers, a 24% rise from the prior year.
In 2023, before Clark’s entry, WNBA games across ESPN averaged 440,000 viewers. Her arrival in 2024 boosted averages to 1.2 million, a 170% increase as reported by ESPN.
Although the Fever’s season has ended, the WNBA leverages this viewership boost to market its television business success. The league’s progress reflects the substantial impact of standout players like Caitlin Clark on overall viewer engagement.
