The community mourns the loss of Maclaine Schmidt, a 22-year-old beloved for his kindness and culinary talent. A resident of Lake Bluff, Schmidt worked in Chicago’s restaurant scene. Restaurateur Bruno Abate remembered him on social media as a ‘brilliant and passionate chef,’ praising his genuine nature.
Tragedy struck on October 18 when Maclaine Schmidt was fatally shot by his father, Bryan Schmidt, in Mundelein. Police reported that Bryan also killed his parents, James, 80, and Rebecca, 77, as well as his girlfriend, Nicole A. Heiser, 37, before taking his own life. The incident led to the discovery of five bodies and two handguns, believed to be used in the crime. Investigations into the motive continue.
Maclaine had worked for Bruno Abate over two years, carving his niche in North Shore kitchens. His passing leaves a significant void for those who knew him. In support of the family, a fundraiser on GoFundMe has raised over $17,000. Funds assist with funeral expenses, therapy, and other costs.
The Lake County coroner’s office stated that Maclaine’s body would be converted into soil by Earth Funeral, a Maryland company. Arrangements for his grandparents and father are still being finalized. Nicole Heiser’s visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee, with a Mass on Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
