Representative Don Bacon Criticizes Trump Administration’s Deportation Efforts

Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, has voiced criticism regarding the Trump administration’s deportation policy. He highlighted cases where removal did not align with what he considers common sense and humanity. Bacon specifically called attention to Mariana, an Omaha woman slated for deportation despite having no criminal record and strong ties to the community.

Bacon expressed concerns to Newsweek, arguing that the current administration has overreached in its deportation efforts. He stressed that some deportation cases, like Mariana’s, are senseless and that improvements in law are needed. He criticized Congress for their lack of action on revising immigration laws.

In a piece for the Omaha World-Herald, Bacon discussed Mariana’s background. She is an honors graduate and aspiring pilot who arrived in the U.S. at 16. Despite her achievements, a deportation order was issued due to missing an immigration hearing as a minor. Bacon noted that Mariana has complied with immigration requirements, including regular check-ins.

“The Administration has overreached on deportations, going after people who make zero sense to deport,” Bacon told Newsweek.

Bacon’s remarks on Newsweek were countered by the White House. It stated that deportations are based on enforcing laws passed by Congress without selective enforcement.

Deportations continue to rise with ICE reporting increased arrests in recent months. Detention statistics as of July reveal a growing number of non-criminal detainees, causing further concern among critics like Bacon.

Bacon advocates immigration reforms, citing the Dignity Act as a potential solution. This legislation seeks to combine increased border security with legal status opportunities for certain immigrants. He highlighted Congress’s failure to modernize immigration laws as an ongoing issue.

Mariana’s deportation is scheduled for September 18. Bacon’s office has pursued all available interventions on her behalf, using her case to illustrate deficiencies in the current immigration system.
