Keri Russell recently shared insights about her early relationship with her partner Matthew Rhys. During her appearance on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast, the 50-year-old actress discussed falling in love with Rhys while filming the initial seasons of “The Americans.”

“We were falling in love, staying up all night, and having intimate moments while wearing crazy disguises,” Russell said on the podcast. She described the experience as fun, sneaky, and exciting.

The couple first met briefly but reconnected in 2012 during the filming of the first season of “The Americans.” Their relationship became public in April 2014 after sparking dating rumors in late 2013.

The couple has a son, Sam, born in May 2016. Russell also has two children, River and Willa, from her previous marriage to Shane Deary.

Despite their long-term relationship, Russell shared with podcast host Chelsea Handler her views on marriage. “I don’t see the need to marry,” she said. Russell remarked on how societal norms have changed. “People used to have to be married to have a credit card. We can have credit cards now,” she joked.

Russell and Rhys share a child, which she believes means “forever.” Hence, she finds marriage somewhat “antiquated.”

Currently, Russell is promoting the fourth season of her Netflix show, “The Diplomat.” She plays Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Russell described her character as intelligent, funny, and fierce, yet flawed in her decision-making.

Russell mentioned, “I love her frankness, I love her bossiness. I love how she always gets herself into difficult situations.” She enjoys playing a character who can make mistakes yet pull herself together when needed.

After Rhys did not thank Russell in his Emmy Awards acceptance speeches, Handler suggested Russell thank all her ex-boyfriends if she wins for “The Diplomat.”

Russell clarified that she told Rhys he did not have to thank her during his speech. She recounted, “I said, ‘Take me off your plate. You don’t have to thank me. I know you love me.’” She emphasized the significance of the moment being his own.
