In an interview with Fox News Digital, Hoge highlighted a video by Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, which sparked online controversy. Bass indicated that for every dollar donated to her campaign, the city government would match six times that amount.
Hoge expressed that many outside California ‘don’t understand’ the situation there. She explained that the electoral process, which might seem unusual or flawed to others, is codified in state rules. The viral social media reaction further echoes this notion.
Understanding the Super Match Program
Bass’s comments involved the city’s super match program, which matches donations six-to-one for qualified contributions from Los Angeles residents. This approach emerged following a competitive mayoral primary where Republican candidate Spencer Pratt gained considerable support. However, some social media figures like Billboard Chris and Matt Van Swol questioned its legality.
“How is it legal to take money from Los Angeles taxpayers to fund your re-election?”
Despite the criticism, Hoge noted that the program is legal because it stemmed from a public campaign-financing system approved by Los Angeles voters in 1990. This system applies not only to mayoral campaigns but also to City Council elections, which include Democratic Socialists of America members.
A Broader Message to Republicans
Among the voices in Los Angeles, Hoge suggested that Bass’s video sends the same message Republicans have encountered for years: the challenge of opposing ingrained city policies. Spencer Pratt’s campaign bolstered arguments for common sense and governance, leaving an impact despite California’s political climate.
Hoge urged Republicans across America not to dismiss California, describing the state as a ‘gem’ worth fighting for. Addressing Republicans directly, she emphasized California’s potential for personal freedom and self-direction.
