Republicans Plan Third Reconciliation Package Amid Political Tensions

2 weeks ago 0

As Congress races to finalize a third reconciliation package, the Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), Rep. August Pfluger from Texas, expressed optimism in an interview on the Ruthless Podcast. ‘On affordability, on fraud, and on defense, we’re going to run a two-minute drill,’ Pfluger remarked. ‘In fact, we’re planning for it now.’

Reconciliation is a budget measure that lets the Senate pass legislation with a simple majority vote. Most other bills need 60 votes to bypass the filibuster in the Senate. The House plans to vote on an immigration-focused reconciliation bill later this week after the Senate approved it last week.

Pfluger expressed frustration over the necessity of using reconciliation to pass bills funding defense-related agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). ‘I’m hopeful about this country,’ Pfluger stated. ‘It’s unfortunate that we need partisan-only bills for defense-related measures.’

Podcast co-host Josh Holmes echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the Democrats acted in a partisan manner on issues that should ideally gain consensus. He remarked, ‘At a time of war, this should be a given.’

Pfluger outlined priorities for the third bill, emphasizing affordability, fraud, and defense along with housing, energy, and healthcare.

‘3.0 is different,’ Pfluger mentioned. ‘We are listening to our constituents in our districts. They find things expensive, and they know it’s due to Biden’s inflation policies. What can we do about housing, energy, and healthcare?’

He expressed confidence that congressional action could give Republicans solid ground to campaign on in the coming midterms. ‘We have 75 to 80 million Trump supporters that we need to galvanize again,’ Pfluger said. ‘Let’s engage them in Minnesota, California, and states where fraud exists.’

Fraud has become central in the Republican rhetoric ahead of the elections. Vice President JD Vance’s Fraud Task Force has identified massive government waste. Rep. Brandon Gill from Texas highlighted fraud in a recent viral hearing.

In a Ruthless interview, Ohio’s Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy reported around $1.1 trillion of improper Medicaid payments at state and federal levels.

Pfluger’s interview is part of the Ruthless Midterm Interview Series, aimed at interviewing major candidates nationwide. Over 15 states have been covered to date, with more interviews planned before the November midterms.

With the general election set for November 3rd, voters in Texas and across the nation are preparing to cast their votes.
