Weeks after publicly sharing about her facelift, Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about her reasons for the procedure and her thoughts on future cosmetic surgeries. Attending the 2026 Tony Awards, O’Donnell, 64, who underwent a facelift in January, explained her decision and offered her views on other cosmetic enhancements.
Speaking with E! News at the event, she expressed no interest in further surgeries. “I’m on Mounjaro for three years. I have diabetes and lost over 50 pounds, which left extra skin around my face,” O’Donnell shared. “There were lines that made me seem sad. People in Ireland would ask, ‘Are you upset, darling?’ and I’d reply, ‘That’s just my face.'”
O’Donnell emphasized authenticity in today’s world. “People keep lying daily, which is depressing and unsettling. For me, truth and love matter. I wanted to express the complicated feelings I had about my choice,” she continued.
I just felt it was better to be truthful than not, and I didn’t want some tabloid to go, ‘Gotcha!’
O’Donnell found it necessary to be upfront about her surgery, preferring honesty to potential tabloid revelations. “The cost exceeds any car I’ve bought, but I can’t drive around in my face,” she added.
Discussing her surgery last month, the former talk show host expressed guilt and shame. “I had strong moral feelings against facelifts,” O’Donnell wrote on Substack. “I lost 50 pounds and gravity took its toll. Acceptance started feeling dishonest.”
Her child, Clay, played a significant role in her decision-making. “My 13-year-old learned about it and stressed, ‘You earned your wrinkles.’ It wasn’t subtle, and it stung,” O’Donnell reflected. “Clay reminded me that young women look up to me, which had a strong impact.”
The comedian realized her body shouldn’t be subjected to any imposed ideals, even well-intended ones. “That’s still not freedom,” she mentioned. Delaying the decision for months, she pondered her motivations.
I wanted a limit. I wanted to still be me, just… less haunted.
Ultimately, O’Donnell decided on the facelift in January. She felt she appeared as a “more well-rested, emotionally stable” version of herself. Despite this, she dealt with guilt and deceit.
O’Donnell struggled with the secretive nature of her surgery. “My desire to show myself led to questions about truth. I feel ‘shameful’ about my privilege, recognizing the facelift was costly,” she noted.
As she navigates life with her youngest child, O’Donnell reflected, “At 64, I am just happy to be alive, able to feel and choose. For the girl I was, the woman I am, and those joining me, this is me.”
