Ryan Rolison always had impressive talent, leading to his selection by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the 2018 draft. This year, the 29-year-old left-hander has managed to translate that talent into results with the Chicago Cubs. He struggled during his rookie season with the Rockies, posting a 7.02 ERA across 31 games. However, with the Cubs, Rolison has embraced his role after receiving a call-up in mid-April. As of Tuesday, he holds a 2.89 ERA in 52 appearances. ‘It’s been a dream come true to play for the Cubs and contribute significantly to the bullpen,’ Rolison shared with the Tribune.

Manager Craig Counsell recalls the initial positive impression the Cubs’ pitching coaches had of Rolison during spring training. ‘We felt we had something special,’ Counsell explained, highlighting how Rolison’s health has been crucial to his success this season. ‘This talented pitcher just hadn’t found the answers yet. Now, he not only found those answers, but was also ready to embrace them.’

The Cubs acquired Rolison from the White Sox in January, aiming to refine his skills during spring training. Rolison, acknowledging his prior struggles, was willing to change: ‘If something’s not working, you need to fix it,’ he stated. Rolison attributes his current success to the freedom the Cubs granted him in pitching, a simplified approach focusing on one part of the strike zone, and tweaks in his pitching arsenal. Adding a sinker and sweeper has enhanced his strategy, notably giving him an edge against left-handed hitters.

Despite some challenges against right-handers, Rolison remains optimistic about his potential for improvement. His ability to perform in crucial game situations has grown alongside his confidence, presenting Manager Counsell with a dependable option amidst an injury-ridden pitching staff. ‘I’ve learned to trust my ability to get the job done,’ Rolison remarked. Experiencing Wrigley Field’s atmosphere during games, he is eager for the playoffs, understanding it would be an even greater experience.

The Cubs aim to secure the league’s top wild-card spot over the coming weeks, which could present an opportunity for Rolison to perform on the big stage during the playoffs.
