In Evian-les-Bains, France, Group of Seven (G7) leaders have voiced their support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s tentative accord with Iran. The agreement aims to open the Strait of Hormuz and extend a fragile ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron described it as a ‘very good deal,’ noting that it addresses instability with dire economic implications.
During his press conference, Trump declared the deal ‘historic,’ claiming that G7 leaders endorsed it. U.S. officials provided journalists with the deal’s text, which is slated for formal signing in Switzerland. The U.S. plans to end sanctions on Iran, contingent on a final agreement concerning Tehran’s nuclear program. Trump expressed optimism, stating, ‘They want to sign.’
The summit, hosted at a lakeside resort in the French Alps, concluded with discussions on artificial intelligence and economic growth. Leaders voiced concerns about China’s export practices affecting global markets. Representatives from India, South Korea, Kenya, and Brazil attended.
Trump attended a dinner at the Palace of Versailles before returning to Washington. He praised both Macron and his wife, Brigitte, addressing her as ‘amazing.’
Reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains crucial. Trump needs to convince the Republican party of the deal’s effectiveness in curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Additionally, the international community is keen to see the promised reopening of the strait for oil tanker traffic. G7 leaders noted that an international mission led by France and the U.K. could help facilitate this.
The agreement seeks to end conflict in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. The deal ensures Lebanon’s ‘territorial integrity’ after recent Israeli attacks. G7 leaders supported Lebanese efforts toward a robust ceasefire, urging the disarmament of Hezbollah. Israeli actions have resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
In unanimous declarations, G7 leaders emphasized their support for Ukraine amidst Russia’s invasion. They pledged to enhance air defense deliveries and intensify sanctions on Moscow, targeting oil and gas sectors. Trump described the dialogues on Ukraine as ‘productive.’
Moreover, the G7 committed to combating the international drug trade. Trump’s administration has targeted drug-trafficking boats in Latin America, drawing criticism over the legal basis for such military actions.
In a separate declaration, the G7 reaffirmed efforts against migrant smuggling and human trafficking, labeling them as harmful transnational crimes. They stressed the importance of national border control and highlighted the risks faced by trafficked individuals.
Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing that the U.S. is near a trade deal with India. He praised Modi as a shrewd negotiator and commented on the incident involving Indian sailors, emphasizing the prioritization of their safety.
