Just five plays into the new NFL season, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold found himself back in the locker room due to an injury. During the Seahawks’ opening series, New England Patriots linebacker Dre’Mont Jones sacked Darnold, causing him to land awkwardly. Darnold was seen limping on the sidelines before he went into the blue medical tent for evaluation. He then made his way to the locker room, still walking with a limp.
Sam Darnold’s participation is now questionable after this incident, which handed quarterback duties over to Drew Lock. Jones’ tackle was clean; the injury stemmed from how Darnold fell on the turf.
Initially, Darnold seemed okay, jogging to the sideline, but observers, including NBC/Peacock’s Mike Tirico, noted his worsening limp. Since entering the medical tent, he hasn’t returned.
It’s crucial for the Seahawks to have Darnold on the field. His leadership was pivotal when the team clinched a Super Bowl win against the Patriots in February, celebrated with the “12s” fanbase this Wednesday.
In 2025, Darnold matched a stellar season he had with the Minnesota Vikings, finishing with a 14-3 record. He threw for 4,048 yards, achieving 25 touchdowns but also 14 interceptions, with a completion rate of 67.7%. During the playoffs, he delivered five touchdowns in three games without a single interception.
The Seahawks’ fans are hopeful Darnold’s injury is minor and doesn’t lead to an extended absence. Drew Lock, serving as backup, filled in for Darnold previously in 2025. Having spent the 2023 season in Seattle and 2024 with the New York Giants, Lock has 28 career starts. He’s achieved a 10-18 record, throwing for 6,369 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.
