Samsung has introduced its first AI-powered glasses at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, marking its entry into the wearable eyewear segment within the Galaxy series. The event showcased two frame designs from popular eyewear brands, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. At first glance, both designs resemble ordinary glasses, which is an intentional feature.
Reporters who previewed the frames noted their light weight, indicating the internal electronics are barely noticeable. During a media session, James Choi, Samsung’s EVP and head of XR R&D, emphasized the importance of comfort for long-term wear. He explained that if the glasses are too heavy, the stylish design won’t matter.
Frame Designs and Collaborations
The Gentle Monster frame offers a sleek design with thin arms, a uniform black finish, and a flat top edge that gracefully curves downward. Warby Parker’s design provides a warmer look, featuring deep brown tones and a gentle upward curve along the brow. Samsung worked closely with these brands to ensure the frames fit comfortably on the forehead and ears, which is crucial for wearing them up to nine hours a day.
Features and Technology
The glasses prioritize audio features and include a built-in camera. Similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses, they are designed for voice interaction, with no display or heads-up projection. Users interact with voice commands, touch controls, and gestures linked to a paired Galaxy Watch. The Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip manages processing and heat dissipation within the compact frame.
Google Gemini powers the AI functionalities, providing users with real-time navigation, instant language translation, and location-specific recommendations. The built-in camera enables live point-of-view sharing during calls, automatic note capture from whiteboards, and real-time text translation.
Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, remarked that this eyewear combines top-tier designs with advanced AI assistance, facilitating hands-free help throughout the day. This integration showcases Google’s and Samsung’s vision of incorporating intelligent features into daily life.
Practical Details and Market Launch
The glasses boast a battery life of nine hours per charge, with the charging case providing enough capacity for seven additional full charges. Although Samsung hasn’t revealed pricing or a precise release date, a fall launch in select markets is confirmed. The rumored price range is between $379 and $499, but no official announcement has been made.
With Meta Connect set for September 23, Samsung aims to move swiftly in the competitive landscape. The partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with their retail networks and optical fitting services, could be a unique selling point not evident in spec comparisons. Won-Joon Choi, Samsung’s MX COO, envisions AI assistance as a seamless part of daily routines, suggesting the eyewear could be appealing if they remain wearable even without active AI engagement.
