The Los Angeles Innocence Project (LAIP) argues new evidence could challenge the conviction. They highlight these claims in a docuseries, Scott Peterson: The New Evidence, suggesting mishandling of witness testimonies and potential oversights in the investigation.
Alleged Witness Accounts
Fifteen individuals reportedly saw Laci walking her dog after the time Peterson left home on December 24, 2002. Defense attorney Chris Pixley argues these accounts were neglected.
“You have to wonder whether the trial would have had a different outcome,” said Pixley.
Burglary Connection
The defense also points to a burglary near the Peterson residence on the day of Laci’s disappearance. Peterson’s lawyers assert Laci might have interrupted the burglary, leading to her abduction and murder.
A burned van with a bloodstained mattress was found a mile away on Christmas Day, yet it wasn’t linked to Laci’s case. Former detective Ninette Toosbuy questions the dismissal of this as potential evidence.
Prosecution’s Stance
The prosecutors argue the previous investigation was thorough, asserting the new insights do not hold significant weight. They note the van and burglary were unrelated to Laci’s disappearance, stating that the burglary occurred post-disappearance.
Prosecutors also dismiss claims of mishandled testimonies, maintaining many reported sightings were inconsistent and unreliable.
Laci Peterson’s Family
Sharon Rocha, Laci’s mother, remains firm in her belief of Scott’s guilt despite the new documentary claims.
“There is no new evidence,” Rocha stated.
Legal Challenges and Appeal
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Hill recently denied Peterson’s petition to overturn the conviction. District Attorney Jeff Laugero reinforced the necessity of justice for Laci and Conner.
Despite the denial, Peterson’s attorneys plan to appeal to a higher California court.
