Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed Supports Trump’s Plan to Cut Military Aid to Israel

1 day ago 0

Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed expressed support for President Donald Trump’s proposal to terminate nearly $4 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Israel. During an appearance on Morning Joe, El-Sayed, representing Michigan, agreed with Trump’s stance. He stated, “I don’t think that we should be continuing to subsidize a foreign military that has done the worst things with our money.”

El-Sayed further expressed willingness to collaborate with the president on this issue. He remarked, “I’d love to work with him on doing that. In fact, I don’t know that we should be continuing to sell weapons to a country that is, again, using our weapons to do awful things.”

This week, Trump announced plans to end U.S. military assistance to Israel by the end of 2026. He disclosed an agreement made earlier with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump argued that Israel no longer needs the funding. However, details on the implementation of this change remain unspecified.

According to a 2016 memorandum of understanding, the U.S. is obligated to provide Israel with $3.8 billion annually through fiscal year 2028. This includes $3.3 billion for military financing and $500 million for missile-defense programs.

Trump proposed that Israel could continue to purchase American weapons and might receive additional support if required.

The agreement between Trump and Netanyahu is noteworthy because Trump had previously criticized El-Sayed during Michigan’s Senate campaign. Israeli policy was a significant issue during the election, with El-Sayed opposing ongoing U.S. military support.

This is a developing story, and further updates will follow.
