Severe Weather in Metro Detroit Causes Devastation

Severe weather recently swept through multiple communities in Metro Detroit. The National Weather Service confirmed the occurrence of three tornadoes in Southeast Michigan, intensifying the impact of the storms.

Tornado Strikes Lincoln Park

On Thursday, an EF-0 tornado moved through Lincoln Park around 4 p.m., producing winds reaching up to 70 mph. The strong gusts damaged areas along Fort Street, including the park adjacent to Kennedy Memorial Rec and Senior Center. Remarkably, the First Baptist Church remained unharmed. Julie Vasquez, a Lincoln Park resident, expressed disbelief after witnessing uprooted trees.

Impact in Detroit

Detroit faced significant destruction as an EF-2 tornado disrupted sectors along Meldrum and Benson streets. Homes, industrial facilities, and power lines suffered extensive damage. However, the New Liberty Baptist Church experienced only a power outage. Pastor Maurice Stimage, who has led the church for two decades, noted the surrounding devastation but emphasized the church community’s readiness to assist.

Stimage highlighted the struggle of local small businesses confronting severe damage and pondering recovery strategies.

Utility Response and Power Restoration

DTE Energy’s Senior Vice President of Electric Operations, Brian Claka, described the damage as one of the worst in his career. The storm impacted approximately 450,000 customers. On Saturday afternoon, 4,000 utility workers were actively restoring power, and by 5:45 p.m., about 75,961 were still without service. DTE aims to restore power to 90% to 92% of its customers by Saturday night.

Safety Measures

DTE urges residents to exercise caution during clean-up activities, particularly around fallen power lines. The utility advises keeping generators outdoors to ensure safety. Brian Claka stressed the importance of waiting for power crew assessments before initiating cleanup operations.
