Shooting Incident at Warner Robins High School Leaves One Student Injured

On Wednesday afternoon, a shooting occurred on the campus of Warner Robins High School in Georgia, resulting in one student being injured. A 14-year-old student is currently in custody, according to officials.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office stated that the shooting took place at Warner Robins High School. Initially, it was reported that two individuals were injured, but Sheriff Matt Moulton later confirmed that only one student was hurt. The wounded student was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The incident unfolded after an argument between two ninth-grade students in a school bathroom. The argument escalated, and one student reportedly pulled out a gun and shot the other, as explained by Sheriff Moulton during a news briefing. The shooting occurred around 2:15 p.m. local time. The student who fired the gun fled the scene on foot but was apprehended in a nearby neighborhood.

Fortunately, what could have been a much worse incident was minimized to us only having one student injured, Moulton said.

Authorities have not provided information on how the firearm was obtained or to whom it may be registered. Details regarding the charges the teen may face remain undisclosed.

In response to the incident, Warner Robins High School will remain closed for all students for the rest of the week. Staff will not report to work on Thursday. A crisis team will be on campus on Friday and Monday to offer support to students and staff.

Warner Robins is situated in Central Georgia, approximately 100 miles south of Atlanta.

Georgia lawmakers expressed their thoughts to the Warner Robins community following the shooting. Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda W. Patrick shared her sorrow about the incident through a Facebook post. She highlighted the impact on students, faculty, parents, and the wider community.

This type of incident impacts our students, faculty, and parents, but also our entire community. We appreciate all of our public safety officers, police, and fire, for their rapid response in protection of our children, she stated. We shall overcome together.

Governor Brian Kemp used X to convey his gratitude to first responders for their quick actions that controlled the situation and ensured the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

Their action quickly brought the situation under control and kept students, faculty, and staff safe, Kemp wrote. As we wait for more details to emerge, we’re thankful for all those who keep our classrooms safe.

Senator Raphael Warnock also shared his prayers for the injured student and acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement and first responders.
