On August 3, 1991, Lollapalooza made its debut in Chicago at the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park. Performers included Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, and Nine Inch Nails. It was a nine-hour show, hailed by Tribune critic Greg Kot as potentially the most ambitious music festival ever staged because, unlike Woodstock or Live Aid, Lollapalooza was designed as a traveling festival. In 2005, it became a yearly event in Grant Park.
