SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket narrowly missed launching on a test flight due to engine startup failures. These problems caused the launch to be aborted, leading the company to investigate before trying again. Starship, standing at 407 feet tall with 33 engines, is the world’s largest rocket.
The launch was captured on SpaceX’s webcast, showing engine ignition starting three seconds before scheduled liftoff. Engines were abruptly shut down, leaving the rocket on the pad. The launch team promptly began defueling the rocket. Elon Musk mentioned via his social platform X that another attempt could occur within days.
Conditions favored SpaceX, with weather not causing any hindrance. Aboard Starship were 20 of SpaceX’s advanced Starlink satellites. Their mission was to communicate with satellites already in orbit while capturing images of Starship’s heat shield during the expected hour-long flight. The plan was for both the booster and spacecraft to be lost at sea.
NASA has engaged SpaceX to land astronauts on the moon, following an absence of over 50 years from the lunar surface. The agency has contracts with SpaceX and Blue Origin for developing lunar landers. Starship and Blue Moon need to be ready by next year for Artemis III, to test docking procedures. A future mission, Artemis IV set for 2028, aims to land astronauts using one of these landers on the moon’s south pole.
