Known for his notoriety as a former reality TV villain, Pratt employs a strategy focused on winning over internet audiences, which involves leveraging outlandish artificial intelligence videos and direct social media engagement.

Engaging the Digital Sphere

Pratt’s campaign revolves around capturing attention online with creative and shocking elements. His team uses AI to produce vivid videos, portraying him in various attention-grabbing scenarios, such as battling the current mayor, Karen Bass, in a lightsaber duel. Additionally, his campaign enlists freelance editors to create shareable social media content, attacking city leaders and spreading false claims about city governance.

It’s a tactical move to align with the combative style popular among supporters of former President Trump. Steve Bannon, former adviser to Trump, remarked on Pratt’s approach as bringing politics to those who typically dislike it by evoking a non-traditional and entertaining manner.

The Political Landscape

The mayoral primary, scheduled for June 2, will see Pratt, a Republican, compete against Democratic incumbent Karen Bass and progressive council member Nithya Raman. Despite the odds, Pratt’s presence online seeks to shake up the traditional campaign approach. His confrontational rhetoric on platforms like TikTok has aimed at criticizing Bass’s management of the Pacific Palisades wildfire crisis.

However, Pratt’s strategy has come under scrutiny, as he accuses the city’s administration of mishandling homelessness and finances without presenting evidence. While he calls for drastic measures, such as mass arrests to clear homelessness, city representatives like Raman dismiss his tactics as disconnected from the realities faced by the entertainment industry.

A Different Kind of Endorsement

Pratt’s embrace of digital platforms and right-wing networks, including podcast endorsements from figures like Joe Rogan, highlights his direct appeal to young male influencers. However, experts caution that his style, which caters to audiences seeking out brash politics, may not translate into electoral success.

Former Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin, currently directing the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs, notes that while gaining traction online serves Pratt’s outreach, it’s not synonymous with electoral victories. Pratt’s campaign capitalizes on a network of conservative influencers and media, such as Elon Musk’s social media engagement and Rupert Murdoch’s California Post, to amplify his message.

Challenges and Criticism

Despite his online presence, Pratt faces the reality of Los Angeles’ political makeup, where registered Democrats significantly outnumber Republicans. Additionally, his use of AI-generated content can risk alienating voters, as noted by Bannon, with potential overuse threatening to diminish the seriousness of his campaign.

While Trump publicly aligns with Pratt, the candidate cautiously distances from overt MAGA associations in a race emphasizing its nonpartisan nature. The fine line Pratt walks aims to balance right-wing endorsements while appealing to a wider voting base.
