Illinois Green Card Holder Granted Bond Hearing After Year in ICE Custody

27 minutes ago 0

A federal judge in Kentucky has ordered a bond hearing for Beata Siemionkowicz, a green card holder from Illinois, detained by ICE for over a year. Siemionkowicz, originally from Poland, has lived in the U.S. since 1995 and became a permanent resident in 2003. She was arrested by ICE agents in 2025 for past misdemeanors and alleged document forgery. Her hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

United States District Judge Karen Caldwell granted Siemionkowicz’s petition for habeas corpus due to a violation of her due process rights. This decision echoes the Supreme Court’s interest in reviewing a policy denying bond hearings to immigrants, potentially affecting long-term detainees like Siemionkowicz.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois represents Siemionkowicz. Attorney Hirsh Joshi spoke about the significance of this case in addressing broader detention issues. If granted bond, Siemionkowicz can continue her legal battle outside detention, though her December 2025 deportation order stands. Her daughters, Claudia and Gabi, remain hopeful for her release.

The case highlights harsh conditions at Campbell County Detention Center, drawing national criticism. Congresswoman Delia Ramirez and others have investigated the facility, following reports of inhumane treatment. Efforts continue to secure Siemionkowicz’s release, while her family eagerly awaits the outcome of the bond hearing.
