Steve Smith Sr. Joins ESPN After Layoffs

Following the recent layoffs at ESPN after its merger with NFL Network, the network is working to fill the spaces once occupied by figures like Cam Newton and Karl Ravech. One notable addition is Steve Smith Sr., a former teammate of Newton from the Carolina Panthers.

Steve Smith Sr. is set to have a recurring role in ESPN’s studio programming. His appearances may include popular shows such as “Get Up,” “First Take,” and “NFL Live,” according to reports by Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports.

Smith, known for his passionate playing style, previously played for the Baltimore Ravens and joined the NFL Network after retiring in 2016. He currently co-hosts “The 89 Show,” a podcast focused on the wide receiver position. The podcast, which references his jersey number, is co-hosted with NFL Network insider James Palmer. Smith provides analysis based on his playing experience, while Palmer brings insights from his reporting and coaching sources.

Smith gained attention for his direct criticism of other players, such as wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos. Smith labeled Jeudy as a “JAG — just a guy,” suggesting the team would eventually let him go. Despite attempts to apologize, Jeudy did not accept the apology.

Smith elaborated on his comments on NFL Network, stating, “I’ll say it again, I’m sorry I said you were a JAG, just a guy, who’s an average wide receiver they used a first-round pick on that isn’t doing anything. I hope that today you actually show up in a way that you haven’t showed up since they drafted you.” He added, “I’m sorry for saying that you’re an average wide receiver that they will eventually move on [from]. When teams call me, asking if they should trade for you, I will say no, don’t trade for Jerry Jeudy because he’s mentally unable to handle constructive criticism from people who watch specifically, ‘Can he be a wide receiver?'”

Smith also had a well-known feud with Cam Newton, which they managed to resolve in a special episode of “The 89 Show.”
