Potential Benefits of Strength Training in Pregnancy
A recent clinical trial in Spain suggests strength training during pregnancy could reduce the risk of gestational diabetes in women who are overweight or obese. It may also enhance quality of life. Dr. Teresa E. Santa Cruz led this study, observing 209 pregnant women with body mass indexes of 25 or more. The goal was to determine if structured strength training could help prevent gestational diabetes mellitus, a condition known to affect blood sugar during pregnancy and increase complications.
Study Design and Implementation
Participants were divided into two groups: one followed a strength-training program, and the other received standard prenatal care. Those in the exercise group started training between 12 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, continuing until about 36 weeks. The regimen included one supervised session and home workouts each week.
Key Findings
The results, published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, indicate a promising benefit though not definitive proof of preventing gestational diabetes. Dr. Robert Thompson of Care Point Boston remarked on the potential metabolic benefits of resistance training during pregnancy.
Among women in the exercise group, only 2% developed gestational diabetes. This contrasts with over 7% in the control group. Notably, none of the women who completed at least two exercise sessions weekly developed the condition. These preliminary findings encourage further exploration.
Additional Health Benefits
The study also reported fewer cases of hydramnios, where no cases appeared in the exercise group compared to four in the control group. Participants noted significant improvements in daily well-being and quality-of-life scores, with reduced symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, and physical discomfort.
Safe and Monitorable Exercise
Dr. Thompson emphasizes that strength training does not need high intensity to be beneficial. Exercises using body weight, free weights, or resistance bands are effective. Monitoring for overexertion signs like persistent fatigue or dizziness is essential.
Implications for Future Research and Care
Gestational diabetes, impacting 5-9% of pregnancies in the U.S., poses significant risks. This study does not prove strength training as a prevention method but highlights quality-of-life benefits and potential risk reduction.
Importantly, no increase in adverse outcomes was observed among participants who engaged in strength training. Authors caution the adherence rate was around 50%, suggesting additional resources may be needed in routine prenatal care programs. Larger trials could provide clearer insights into the effectiveness of such exercise interventions.
