Student Dies at Oregon’s Blue Pool Due to Dangerous Cold Waters

A 21-year-old student from Wichita State University lost his life after jumping into the cold waters of a well-known Oregon swimming spot. The place is known for its perilous temperature, capable of causing immediate physical shock.

The student, Kenny Truong, was from Wichita, Kansas. He was visiting Tamolitch Falls, commonly referred to as Blue Pool, with friends when the tragedy occurred. The incident happened on the evening of June 26, as confirmed by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

“Witnesses describe him struggling as he swam toward shore, before submerging,” stated Linn County Undersheriff Micah Smith. “Despite efforts from those present and first responders, Kenny did not survive.”

The authorities received an emergency call about the struggle at 8:47 p.m. that evening. Kenny Truong, a finance major at Wichita State University, was known for his involvement in the Cummings Student Managed Investment Fund.

The water at Tamolitch Falls is notorious for its low temperature, averaging 37 degrees Fahrenheit. Such conditions can induce immediate shock, making them extremely hazardous for swimmers.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the area’s dangers, pointing out that the cliffs surrounding Blue Pool range from 10 to 60 feet high. The location’s remote nature, coupled with minimal cellphone service, complicates rescue efforts.

The sheriff’s office cautioned visitors to assess risks seriously before entering the water. They advised checking on companions and calling 911 if someone faces difficulty.

A GoFundMe page, created by Carter Nguyen, remembers Truong as a beloved friend who inspired others. Nguyen described him as someone who made everyone feel valued and capable.
