A suspect was taken into custody in Des Moines, Iowa, following a shooting at the city’s main post office. Two people were shot and a third was hurt trying to escape, according to authorities. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Sergeant Paul Parizek stated, “They’re all at the hospital; they are being cared for right now.” The response from law enforcement was swift, with officers arriving on the scene within three minutes of the incident. The shooting took place on the second floor of the post office around 9:10 a.m. local time. Video footage from CBS affiliate KCCI-TV shows officers quickly surrounding the area following the reports of gunfire.

The main post office is located just north of downtown Des Moines and is directly across the street from one of the city’s key hospitals. The building functions as a four-story regional sorting facility and includes a walk-in service counter for public access.

The Associated Press is actively seeking further details. Governor Kim Reynolds has been in contact with the Department of Public Safety concerning the incident. She shared online, “The suspected shooter is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. We are monitoring the situation and our prayers are with everyone involved. Grateful for the immediate response by law enforcement.”

Des Moines Public Schools communicated through social media that upon being alerted by police at 9:20 a.m. about the shooting, nearby schools and centers entered a secure status, which restricted entry and exit. This precautionary measure was lifted at 10 a.m. once police confirmed the suspect was in custody.

Senator Chuck Grassley addressed the situation on social media, expressing gratitude towards the quick action of law enforcement and the care provided to those injured. He shared his and his wife Barbara’s prayers for everyone affected by the event.
