Teen Arrested for Penn State Student’s Murder, Second Suspect Sought

U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of Penn State student Billy Schmidt. The arrest took place in Colorado. Philadelphia police state that the 16-year-old, along with another 16-year-old suspect, will face adult charges for the robbery and murder that occurred on June 6.

Second Suspect Still at Large

The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, is currently evading capture. Authorities have issued a wanted poster in an effort to locate him.

Links to Other Crimes

A person involved in the recent theft of an off-duty police officer’s car in Philadelphia is also of interest in the murder case. Billy Schmidt, aged 22, was fatally injured during an armed robbery in the early morning hours of June 6. After officers found him with a gunshot wound to the chest, he was transported to the hospital but was pronounced deceased shortly after.

Police indicate that 19-year-old Khadfi Fleming was allegedly involved in the car theft. This incident is linked to Schmidt’s murder case.

Details of the Incident

Officials reported that officers near 70th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard saw a red Lexus without headlights being followed by a dark SUV. Two individuals were observed approaching the Lexus before gunfire erupted.

The suspects allegedly stole a green Dodge Charger, property of an off-duty police officer. The officer pursued and confronted the suspects, during which gunfire was exchanged.

Fleming is also regarded as a person of interest in Schmidt’s murder, according to police.

Investigation and Evidence

The investigation revealed Schmidt was returning home from watching the NBA Finals with friends when the robbery occurred around 1:30 a.m. Surveillance footage shows Schmidt demanding his phone be returned to him. A phone is seen discarded before a gunshot rings out.

The police released video footage of the two suspects involved in the murder.

Arrests Made

Khadfi Fleming’s 16-year-old brother was arrested in Colorado during June, alongside another teenager who surrendered to authorities.

Billy Schmidt, studying journalism at Penn State World Campus, was nearing his graduation scheduled for December.
