The Tennessee Volunteers continue their impressive season. Ranked 13th in the College Football Playoff, they defeated the sixth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats 34-6 in Knoxville.
The game was a defensive showcase for Tennessee. Out of 10 offensive drives, Kentucky ended three with punts, two on downs, two with fumbles, and one with an interception. They only scored two field goals.
The Volunteers led 13-6 entering the fourth quarter. They capitalized on a Kentucky fumble, converting it into a touchdown. On Kentucky’s next drive, they failed to convert a fourth and one, allowing Tennessee to score again within two plays. Tennessee then executed a 78-yard touchdown drive with 10 consecutive runs.
With a record of 7-2 overall and 4-2 in SEC play, the Volunteers are strong contenders for the College Football Playoff. Their victory disrupted Kentucky’s six-game winning streak. Prior to this loss, Kentucky was No. 6 in the playoff rankings.
Tennessee’s defense was a key component, achieving eight tackles for loss and forcing three turnovers. Kentucky previously held one of the top turnover margins in the country. Tennessee’s DeSean Bishop contributed significantly with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Volunteers also drew motivation from a recent win against Alabama, who was ranked higher despite their loss to Tennessee earlier this season. This victory over Kentucky marked Tennessee’s second major win, offsetting their recent loss to South Carolina.
Kentucky’s defeat complicates their playoff path, removing any margin for error. Tennessee is set to face Texas A&M next, while Kentucky will go up against Florida.
