On June 5, 2026, President Donald Trump was en route from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, aboard Air Force One, speaking to reporters regarding the situation with Iran. Meanwhile, the U.S. military reported intercepting Iranian ballistic missiles and drones aimed at the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf allies.
U.S. Central Command stated that Iran launched seven ballistic missiles targeting Kuwait and Bahrain on Friday. U.S. forces successfully intercepted six missiles, with the seventh failing to hit its intended target. No harm to U.S. personnel occurred in the attacks.
The missile launch followed the U.S. military’s earlier action in shooting down four Iranian drones headed towards the Strait of Hormuz. These drones threatened regional maritime traffic according to U.S. Central Command.
Kuwaiti forces intercepted incoming missiles and drones targeting their nation. Bahrain responded by activating air raid sirens and advising residents to move to safe locations. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard declared it targeted Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait and the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet in Bahrain.
The U.S. has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports to counter Tehran’s control over vital oil and gas shipment routes. This blockade has pushed energy prices upward and created political challenges for President Trump’s party as midterm elections approach.
U.S. Central Command also targeted coastal radar sites, including on an island in the strait, to prevent further attacks. Amid mounting tensions, Trump assured a swift resolution to the conflict with Iran, suggesting that either a formal agreement or more forceful measures would lead to a conclusion.
Negotiators from the U.S. and Iran reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire by 60 days, opening discussions on Iran’s nuclear program. However, Trump requested changes to the agreement, and Iran has not publicly agreed to the revisions.
Further complicating matters, a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. between Lebanon and Israel this week faced resistance from Hezbollah, continuing hostilities near the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Israeli military launched strikes in southern Lebanon, causing casualties and issuing evacuation warnings.
In a broader strategy to constrain Iran, U.S. forces boarded an Iranian-linked oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, supplementing sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and related entities.
